Chapter Four

I had expected a simple game of catch, maybe even one that I could have played along with. However, as soon as a couple warm up passes were thrown, it seemed the game was on.

They fell into a familiar pattern. They would throw the football while the other player was in motion, leading the pass. If it was a good pass, the other person would pass it back the same way. If it was a bad pass, or if they dropped the ball due to a bad catch, they would pick up the ball and run toward the other player. Every time, the runner would try to zig and zag past the defender. It was clear that they were playing two-hand-touch rules, but at the speeds they were moving, some collisions were inevitable. I sat on the sidelines and watched the two muscular men play.

Every pass that John threw was a perfect spiral. I could tell that he had been a quarterback in high school, which was probably why the two of them had initially hit it off. The only time Ian fumbled his passes was when he clearly wanted to.

Ian, on the other hand, had been a receiver. Before he was my stepbrother, a bad pass at practice one day had smashed into his nose, making it crooked. I could never forget how aggressive he had been about it in the days that followed.

Ian still had a rocket of an arm on him, though he was less accurate. Still, I could tell he enjoyed shutting down John's runs every time he made a bad throw. After a string of bad passes by Ian, John looked tired. As he watched a ball fly over his head, he looked at Ian.

“I'm getting past you this time,” John said, then looked over at me and winked.

“Give it your best shot, Hutch,” Ian said.

John jogged back and got the ball, then made an exaggerated show of stretching. He started jogging toward Ian, who stood his ground and watched John like a hawk. A few feet from where Ian stood, John did a little turn. I had seen him do it a few times before, and Ian never fell for it. However, this time, he stopped it midway, and lurched straight toward Ian.

It definitely took Ian by surprise. He had to change directions, and he was clearly off balance. He reached his two hands out to stop him, but clearly was out of control as he slammed into John, taking them both to the ground. It looked like a nasty hit.

In a moment, both guys were laughing. Ian was on his feet first, offering a hand to John. “That was really good. If you were maybe fifteen pounds heavier you would have broken that tackle.”

John grabbed his hand and accepted his help to his feet. “If I were fifteen pounds heavier, I'd be as fat as you and not able to move quickly enough to get around you.”

On the inside, I laughed at that.
