Chapter 7
Katherine enjoyed the service. The children took part as they did a little play and Denise was roped in to be an angel. She wore a little white dress which Rita produced and was obviously enjoying herself.
Rita was so kind, Katherine thought, and would it be that bad to tell her they were camped in the church? Surely, in view of the story of Joseph and Mary having nowhere to stay, she would not mind. She couldnât, was her next thought, because they were trespassing and that was a criminal offence. She wasnât paying to be in the church and Joseph probably did pay, even though it was a stable where they stayed. Unless, of course, they didnât stay in a stable but the manger was outside in a field.
So she would just carry on in the way they were already, and at least for today and the two days afterwards they would be fed and be in the warm for most of the day. Hopefully the baby wouldnât come just yet and by then she should have found somewhere to stay. She had started to hand stitch some more little garments and she would sell them to raise money for rent.
Rita told Denise afterwards that she could keep the angel dress, which made the little girl happy. She changed back into the blue one she had been wearing and said she would wear it on Christmas Day. Mama could make her new dolly another dress but the one she already wore would do for Christmas Day because it was very pretty.
Could she sell a few little outfits the following day, Katherine wondered. The problem was, the doll was not in the store anymore even if she could raise the money for it and she wasnât sure she could raise the money. They had to eat and after Christmas Day there would be no more daily cooked meals.
If the doll was made of cloth she could have run it up herself but it wasnât and Denise would know the difference because porcelain looked totally different to fabric. The feeling of despair when she thought of it began to overwhelm her once more. Two days away was so near. It was like going to the gallows.
Rita came to sit with them where they sat in the hall with Malcolm and Daphne at their table. Hopefully they would chat with her and Arthur if they did have problems and Katherine was pleased when she heard Rita invite them for the evening meal, an invitation they accepted.
The hall was packed and more full than the previous day, probably because the entire congregation seemed to be there. On Christmas Day most would celebrate in their homes but Timothy would be there, Katherine knew.
Timothy, and he was so friendly. He also appeared to be well liked and how was it that he hadnât been snapped up by a woman? Maybe because there were more men than women. She read that in New York. It was the reason ladies became mail order brides because the men couldnât find brides in the west.
