TIP 46: TRY ON-THE-FLY VIDEOS
In this sectionâs previous tips, I encouraged you to find a method to share videos consistently with your students, whether through course announcements, e-mail, discussions, or course content. Most of us would agree that organization and consistency make for a stronger classroom learning experience, whether weâre teaching online or land-based courses. Iâve found that being organized helps my students and me. Iâm a big fan of structure.
In this tip, however, weâre going to throw organization and structure out the window. Why not? Iâm a believer that we should be a bit more both/and and a lot less either/or in our thinking about education and the world. Letâs throw caution to the wind and dance in the paradox. Can you be organized in your timing and placement of videos and also share them on the fly? Yes.
Letâs assume that youâve decided on a method for sharing 1 or more videos with your students consistently. For example, you are going to send out videos with your weekly course announcements in your 15-week course. This is a great plan.
With this plan in place, you begin teaching and reach week 4, when all hell breaks loose. You are getting e-mails every 30 minutes from students who are confused about the upcoming midterm paper. Or, you review your studentsâ recent quiz grades and realize that no one in the course understands a critical course concept. What to do?
Make a video. Without a plan, without attention to consistency, without a second thought, turn on your webcam or smartphone and start recording. Create a video on the fly to address an unexpected and pressing need. We call this âa teachable moment,â and they are one of the best parts of teaching. They keep us on our toes and challenge us to return to the beginnerâs mind, how we thought before we knew everything under the sun about our field of study. This type of ad hoc video might not be part of your carefully laid video creation plans, but it can be an excellent teaching tool to support student learning.
