Myths

We know that people all over the world believe completely different things about where we came from and how we got here. The stories they tell show that. For instance, while some Ancient Greek, Egyptian and many other cultures believed that the world was hatched by a “Cosmic Egg,” others told creation stories of a giant animal that was sent from the sky to build the entire planet out of sticks and mud! We also know something else for sure: they can’t all be right.

While at the time they were thought by many to be facts, those stories are now considered myths. Myths are stories told, often as part of an ancient tradition, to explain some events or the actions of other people. Dave and Chuck enjoy learning about myths from a long time ago and from today because they all tell stories that we can then verify as facts or dismiss as tales.

A myth is a story that was once said to be true, but in some cases people still consider them to be so. Even though today we know that many of them can’t possibly be true, there’s often no way to prove or disprove their truthfulness. Those beliefs can be confusing for everyone because they can’t be verified or tested by smart people or anyone else. They have to be accepted as true on blind faith and nothing else!

People who believe in unverified things aren’t dumb or bad. In fact, believers in myths most of the time just believe because they listened to their family about life’s answers. But those myths didn’t start there – they were given to them by the earliest people!

So, were our ancient ancestors liars? No. They believed in these stories so much they became their facts, their truth. Myths explained everything from “ Why does the rain fall? ” to “ Why do people get sick? ” and “ Where does the sun go at night? ” and many, many other things.

Imagine that one of your friends, let’s call him Billy, brings a pet to show and tell. You were home sick that day, but you want to learn more. You go to school the next day and ask your friends about what happened. Sarah says Billy brought in a big black dog that was mean and scary, but Jason and Thomas remember a medium brown dog that was calm. And Timmy might even tell you that Billy brought in his pet cat!
