I have my grandchildren. One is seven and one is four—they just visited me this morning. I had bought some animals for the two children. They love stuffed animals.

In 1965, I founded the Chicago City Ballet. I’m still Director of Ballet for the Lyric Opera.

I wake up in the morning and I do my pilates exercises. I still do my splits at my bedside before I say my prayers.

Advice for the coming generations? Be sure you have a good teacher. That’s a most important thing. What was it that made me stand out from the other ballerinas of my generation? I was very lucky. I had Balanchine.

My mother wanted me to become a pianist. I said, “No.” My sister was much more limber than I—she could put her leg over her head. But once I met Madame Nijinska, I knew I wanted to be a ballerina.
