It Is All in Your Head

While emotions aren’t easily measured, your natural default to triggers happens in the brain’s limbic system, which controls your fight-flight-freeze response and seems to occur almost instantly. Yet because the limbic system is part of your brain, you have the ability to alter how it interacts with pattern interrupts. So instead of having an automatic negative response to a trigger that comes from your past programming, the pattern interrupt teaches the brain to instead experience a trigger to welcome a pattern interrupt and then make a conscious choice as its preferred response. The pattern interrupt serves as a moment for the brain to take a deep breath before it defaults to fight-flight-freeze mode. It also doesn’t allow the neurological pathway that’s already been created, and is consistently activated by stimuli, to receive the same electrical charge that has so far influenced your beliefs, thoughts, and feelings. Remember, this is why we have seemingly “automatic” responses to most triggers; the negative pathway is prebuilt. But because pattern interrupts diffuse emotions and change your energy, your trauma’s and past programming’s grip loosens, causing new and improved pathways to replace old negative ones.

Using a pattern interrupt is a powerful choice that puts you in charge of your future. You are not a victim of your past or any of its consequent feelings. In fact, neuroscientists have discovered that the physiological life span of an emotion in the body and brain is only about 90 seconds. That’s it! Ninety seconds! A sensation will arise, peak, and dissipate on its own. And then after that 90-second period, you choose to hang on to that emotion, whether it’s a subconscious decision or not. Either way, every time you cue that emotion or reaction, you recycle, reinforce, and amplify it. The emotion’s pathway refires. Your brain runs the manifesting show, but when you view it as an organ that can be reprogrammed with pattern interrupts, you’re the one who’s in control.
