Later that evening, with Danny happily preoccupied with a naval battle in the bathtub, Gina picked up the telephone in her bedroom and dialed the number Gary had left for Jess Masterson.

“Hello?” a gravelly voice sounded.

“Mr. Masterson?”

“Yes.”

“This is Gina Bowden. I wanted to thank you for the flowers and the apology.”

There was silence for several seconds before Jess Masterson replied. “Well, I did feel bad for acting so rudely. I appreciate your willingness to look the other way.”

Gina wasn’t sure she agreed with his wording, but she didn’t want to create yet another scene by challenging his statement, especially when she wanted to ask him more about his stand against the Boy Scouts. “May I ask you a question?”

“Certainly,” Masterson replied.

“I wondered why you were so set on fighting this thing out with the Boy Scouts. I mean, I know firsthand there is a lot of local support for Scouting. I suppose I’m just curious as to why you would ruin a good thing for everyone else just because you’re angry at God.”

“Who said I’m doing it because I’m angry at God?” Masterson retorted, his voice betraying his anger. “I suppose that was Gary’s analysis.”

“Well, isn’t it true? I mean, what does it matter to you if the Boy Scouts make it an issue to honor God and country?”

“It matters that they are treating others unfairly by demanding an allegiance to God.”

“I fail to see how it is unfair. No one is forced to join the Boy Scouts. It isn’t a requirement in order to be educated in the public school system. It isn’t necessary in order to be able to vote or serve in government or other forms of public service. It is an elective club, rather like your country club, Mr. Masterson.”

“But my country club doesn’t interfere in my religious beliefs. I may still join the country club so long as I adhere to the rules of the club and pay my dues.”

“It’s no different for the Scouts,” Gina countered. “We adhere to the rules. Rules about being honorable to God and country. Promises to do our best, to help other people. Oh, and we pay dues that are a whole lot less exclusive than the dues you pay to your country club.”

Masterson was silent for several moments. When he spoke, it so surprised Gina that she could do little more than agree to his idea.

“I’d like to come over and talk about this in more detail. Perhaps you could arrange for Gary to be present as well.”

“When?”

“How about tomorrow?”

“We have church in the morning, but the afternoon would be fine. Say around three?”

“Thank you, that would be fine,” Jess replied. “I’ll see you then.”

“Oh, do you have the address?” Gina questioned, forgetting about the flower delivery.

“Yes, it was in the telephone book. That’s how I arranged for the flowers.”

“Of course,” Gina said, feeling rather silly. “Until tomorrow then.”

As she hung up the phone, she heard the unmistakable sound of water being drained from the bathtub. Danny had apparently finished with his bath.
