R ICK OPENED HIS EYES and tried to focus on the clock. It was 4:30 A.M. and he had been tossing and turning for an hour. He rubbed his eyes; his skin felt moist and hot. The flu? It was that time of year. He reached for the bottle of water by his bedside and took a drink. His throat felt raw. Not now! I have too much to do tomorrow.

Rick’s head pounded as he dragged himself to the bathroom to look in his medicine cabinet. This is so weird. . . I’ve been eating healthy, working out, feeling great. I’ve got so many appointments today. . . Rick’s thoughts continued in a blur as he found some cold medicine. He closed the cabinet door, looked at himself in the mirror, and shook his head. Then it hit him: Success Suicide! Of course! This was the breakdown before the breakthrough Coach was talking about it!

He had achieved almost everything he wanted and his body had picked this moment to succumb to a virus. Well, it didn’t matter. He would do exactly what Coach said to do: he would persevere. Rick took the medicine, chased it with some water, checked to make sure his alarm was set and went back to bed.
