Sibyl stood in the vestibule, cold following heat across her skin, and attempted to convince herself she could not possibly have made the suggestions she knew she had made to Latimer.

What had possessed her?

The familiar comfort she felt with him?

Desperation?

The sudden onset of madness?

No, no, no, please, no. Not satisfied with causing a terrible situation with Hunter, she’d now set a second disaster in motion.

Now she had invited Latimer to be the father of her child and she’d also given him more than a vague idea of how Hunter had treated her.

Latimer would never brush her visit to him aside. He would take what she’d told him seriously and try to help her. And, because she had been indiscreet in mentioning her visit to Hunter, there could very well be bad blood between two men who had been such good friends.

Outside his work, Latimer seemed to live a cloistered life. Hunter, on the other hand, was so much more a man of the world and, since he was her friend, he would pretend their encounters had never taken place and in time would probably believe they hadn’t—as long as Latimer didn’t confront him.

Sibyl sat on the bottom step of the staircase. Her experiences with Hunter would be forever vivid to her. And even if he never mentioned their outrageous meetings, whenever she looked at him she’d assume he was recalling her behavior.

She would recall her behavior, too—and his. She had another piece of the mystery about men now, or about some men. Contrary to the claims of the text she had read on the subject, copulation was not as transporting and memorable to men as it was to women. In fact men had a need to copulate because their bodies demanded it. Little had been mentioned about the male brain playing much part in these events. However, in another book there had been a suggestion that a clever wife could captivate and bind her husband to her through creative play and teasing. Sibyl wasn’t certain exactly what was meant by the two latter suggestions. After all, surely a wife would not be expected to produce silk ropes—or even the odd cane—whenever she and her husband entered the marriage bed.

She had a fleeting recollection of her very real image of Latimer. Latimer, naked. She would not dwell on that disturbing incident and she was sure such a thing would never happen again.

But what if it did? What if she started seeing all sorts of people as if they wore no clothes? She shuddered.

She was in a pickle. All the academic study of human sexuality would not erase the stupidity she’d been guilty of such a short time ago. Never mind, she was no longer naive. Why, she had added a most important piece of knowledge to her mounting body of information. All the black squares in the world wouldn’t stop her from knowing exactly what was supposedly hidden. And grateful for the insight she was, too. Hunter’s penis had become much bigger by the time they had been together on the bed for some minutes.
