252. Is there a proper attitude to becoming a good calculator?

Yes. Trust yourself, not your opponent.

If he makes a move you foresaw – but considered bad – don’t assume you were wrong.

Maybe he saw something further that you didn’t. But maybe his move is simply bad. Recheck your analysis to make sure.

As we’ll see in the next few chapters, being able to calculate better is valuable in making sound sacrifices. It is even more important when you are defending than when you are attacking. And it may make up for a lack of knowledge of some basic endgame positions and of techniques for winning a won game.
