THE EXERCISE

Don’t expect anything. Although wise selfishness is rooted in the idea that we are all connected and that helping others is also an act of helping oneself, hold no expectations that the person you’re helping will help you in return.

Spend two weeks treating everyone’s words as if they were the last words of your master. Give them reverence. Ask follow-up questions and listen for what they are expressing a need for. There is no need to announce your support, just hold their needs in your mind and see if you can find the perfect way to help them over the course of the coming weeks.

If you are feeling inspired, review your course pack (here) and see if there are any articles or resources that would be worth sending to the people you have had the opportunity to listen to over the last two weeks.

When you come across a great resource for one of these people, send a note right away. It can be a quick text, a three-line e-mail, or a note in the mail. Don’t overthink it. Immediacy should trump perfection. Be aware of what you are committing to (here). “Help” doesn’t need to come in the form of big, time-consuming commitments. Remember that simply listening and asking the right questions can often be enough.
