CHAPTER 11

“A problem?” Nuzzo’s brow pinched, his voice a mix of worry and confusion. “What would that be?”

“I don’t speak Turkish and I’m not familiar with the traditions and laws of their Mafia.” Brian added after a few moments of pause. “However, I have a friend who possess all the necessary knowledge, but he currently lives in New York City.”

“I don’t care, he may live on Mars; I’ll pay for his spaceship ticket and any other expenses he may have, if you can convince him to help me.” Nuzzo sighed in relief and waved his hand dismissively.

“There’s something more.” Brian spoke cautiously. “One day, when we’ll get back from Turkey, I’ll tell you all about who Luca and I really are, but, until then, please, no questions asked.”

“You have my word.” Nuzzo placed his hand on his heart. “The two of you saved my son’s life in more than one way, I owe you big time.”

“Thank you for trusting Luca and me, you won’t regret it.” Brian swallowed hard a few times. “Now, back to the main subject. I would like to know about this mission.”

Nuzzo relaxed in his chair. “Like I already said, the Turkish Mafia-like organizations are ruled by an aga. All the agas are under the authority of an assembly very similar with The Council of The Ten. Its members are elected every ten years, only the bey, the head of the assembly, is appointed for life. The position belongs to the Orhan clan for seven generations; when he’ll become of age, Mert will step up as the next bey.”

“Baldassare, my friend, is respectful, polite, speaks Turkish and a dozen other languages fluently and is a good orator; I don’t doubt he would convince the agas to allow us take Mert to Sicily.” It was Brian’s turn to smile reassuringly.

“Although Murat expressly stipulated in his will that, after his death, his only son and heir will come to Sicily as part of an agreement between the two of us, the vote of the assembly is still required for Mert, who is underage, to leave the country.” Nuzzo spoke in an apologetic tone. “Sorry, I forgot to mention this aspect.” He pinched the bridge of his nose. “It’s only that I have a lot on my mind.”

“Sometimes, it’s good to talk about the things that weigh you down; it gives you a clearer perspective.” Brian gave the other man a soft, soothing smile. “I’m a good listener, or so everyone who knows me says.”

Nuzzo leaned forward and let out a long, frustrated sigh. “Ennio Nardi, the big bad boss, comes here in two weeks, to order me around. And to see his grandson, of course. Stefano adores my old man.”

“I’m sorry you don’t have a good relationship with your father.” Brian offered sympathetically. “Was it always tense, or is it a more recent thing?”

Nuzzo sighed again, this time with exasperation which was not directed at the man before him. “Two old fools, my father and Il Pupparo. They are playing the same game since mamma died, ten years ago.
