Together, they made breakfast. He tended to the bacon while she made pancakes. When he was finished, he used the bacon grease to fry eggs. While the two of them cooked, they said little. They danced around each other in the small kitchen, smiling, touching each other unnecessarily, her hand on his shoulder, him touching—briefly—her waist.

She was barefoot and wearing a pair of sweatpants and a Reno Aces T-shirt. She wore no bra underneath, and her breasts pressed against the fabric, her nipples hard in the chilly air. Ethan tried not to look.

The blinds were pulled back from the windows, and outside the dark had been replaced by the bright light of sunrise.

When they sat down to eat, Whitney asked Ethan what his next step was.

“I’ve got to get that ledger,” he said. “Somehow.”

“How about I get it for you?”

“No. Thank you, but no.” Ethan already felt like he was putting her in danger by being in her apartment. He didn’t want to involve her any further.

“It’s the only way,” she said.

“I’ll find another.”

He opened his mouth to protest, but she launched into her plan. Shark would likely be looking for Ethan at the funeral, which would leave his office at the club unattended. Even after what Ethan had pulled last night, the funeral should be safe. Shark might attempt to talk to Ethan, but he wouldn’t try to hurt him—he would have to know the police and the FBI might be watching. They could be undercover or at least spying on the proceedings. Meanwhile, Whitney would go to the club and sneak into Shark’s office. It made more sense for her to do it. No one would think twice about her being there.

“As long as the ledger’s there,” she said, “I’ll get it. Let’s just hope he doesn’t keep it with him all the time.”

It seemed like a decent plan, but Ethan didn’t like the idea of putting Whitney at risk.

“I’m not going to the funeral now,” Ethan said. “I don’t have time for that.”

What he didn’t say was that he wouldn’t miss his sister’s funeral for anything if it actually felt like her funeral. But he didn’t see the point of standing next to an empty casket. Finding out what happened to her was the only way to get any closure.

“You have to go to the funeral,” Whitney said. “That’s the whole reason they let you out. It will raise all sorts of red flags if you miss it.”

“It will look suspicious if you’re not there,” Ethan said.

“Not as suspicious as you not being there,” she said. “And you can’t just walk into the club and ask for the ledger. Even if Shark’s not there, Stu will be. Or Bruce. Or both.”

Ethan sat back. Much of his food sat uneaten on his plate. They’d made enough for four people, but he’d lost his appetite and had to force himself to eat what little he did.

“We’ll get you a cell phone,” Whitney said. “A prepaid one. So we can communicate.
