Hadith 20: Facilitating a Captive Audience

It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that:

The Messenger of Allah said, “Whoever says to his companion on Friday, when the imam is delivering the khutbah: ‘Listen attentively,’ has engaged in idle talk.” [An-Nasa’i]

Application in marketing:

The compulsory Friday prayers for men, and the sermon that is delivered before the prayers where its target audience is required to listen to attentively, shows the importance of delivering the message to a captive audience. While the divine nature of Allah SWT’s marketing plan results in the ability to capture people from all walks of life into one common setting to listen to a common message that is the Friday sermon delivered from the minbar or pulpit, marketers can take heed and replicate this process. Firstly, marketers can institutionalise a regular and frequent communications channel with the key stakeholders such as customers or even the entire company. This can come in the form of weekly meetings or online through email newsletters. Secondly, they should check that the attendance is compulsory, or that the message delivered is being read. Thirdly, they should ensure that the message contains both a moral and practical dimension to appeal to both the hearts and minds of their stakeholders.
