One thing to watch for is that PLA will distort more easily than other plastics when exposed to heat. It can warp when exposed to direct sunlight. This also makes it a bad choice for a container that will hold heated items. Do not use it to hold hot foods or tea because PLA is not food safe. Also, PLA should not go in a dishwasher.

Just like gold and jewelry, not all of this filament is made purely of one material. In jewelry, this is known as karat, and it dictates the purity, rigidity, and price of the metal in the jewelry. Filament is no different. However, the main reasons for the concentration of differing material is structural integrity and cost. There should be no more than 40 percent additive material in the mixed-material PLA. If there is more than 40 percent, the filament will lose its strength and become brittle. This might not seem like an issue for the final product, but brittle filament is damaging to the 3D printer’s extruder. Brittle filament can cause jams and warping of the extruder if the printer is laying filament poorly.
