Prioritizing Print Jobs
At the beginning stages of a 3D service, you are likely to handle models in the order received. Once a queue begins to form of models waiting to print, you may choose to develop a system of prioritization. There are several factors to consider, and each library will have a unique set of preferences that determine a priority policy. One is to identify your users and decide if a subgroup will receive priority over others. An academic library may prioritize students over other staff or faculty. A public library may decide to give priority to local users or to teens.
You may also want to base priority on the intended use of the model. At the University of Florida, students with assignments have the highest priority followed by research projects. Other scenarios to consider include assigning a lower priority to patrons who submit multiple pieces or very lengthy print jobs. You may choose to squeeze short jobs in front of very long jobs, or group jobs based upon the requested filament color.
