Make homemade modeling dough and let your child help measure ingredients. Recipes can be found online, and some even suggest adding scents or glitter. Test the temperature of the dough and join your child in creating with the dough while itâs still warm.
Teach your child the joy of giving creative homemade gifts. Start with three long, thin scarves. Bunch the three together and tie a knot near one end. Working on a table or on the floor, teach your child how to braid. Hold the knotted end and help your child tighten the scarves with each crossover. Let your child braid the scarves to the end and tie a knot at that end of the braid. Wear your new scarf proudly, and say to your child, âI think of you every time I look at my scarf!â Or prepare the scarf as a gift for someone else and say, âI know sheâll think of you every time she wears this scarf!â For a smaller project, help your child braid three strips of yarn to make a bookmark.
Write a poem for your child, expressing your love or extolling their virtues. Your poem may be serious or silly. Read the poem to your child and then, depending on their age, write a poem together or encourage them to write you a poem. Try your hand at rhyming verse, free verse, haiku, and limericks. Remind your child that as much as you love them, God loves your child even more! Commit to memory 1 Chronicles 16:34: âGive thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.â
Grab two flashlights, dim or turn off the den lights, turn on the radio, and lie on the floor in sleeping bags at bedtime. Shine the flashlights on the ceiling and let the light beams dance to the music. After the performance, turn off the lights and slumber together on the den floor.
Purchase a kit or build, paint, and hang a birdhouse together for winged visitors. Talk about being grateful to have a roof over your head, pray for those who do not, and think of some ways that you can assist the homeless or a homeless shelter in your area.
Try out this fun craft and then share the final product as a gift. Steep several tea bags in a large pot, following package directions. Set the pot aside for at least fifteen minutes. Let your child help you wet and wring out white cotton handkerchiefs. After an adult carefully removes and discards the tea bags, help your child use a long-handled spoon to submerge the handkerchiefs in the pot of tea. Soak the submerged handkerchiefs for at least one hour. Drain the pot and rinse the handkerchiefs in cold water. Soak the handkerchiefs in a pot of cold water for ten minutes. Wring out the excess water and let dry in a sunny area outside. Once the handkerchiefs are completely dry, place several unused tea bags in the center of a handkerchief, gather up the extra material, and tie closed with a pretty ribbon.
