HOGAN’S MEN HAD FINALLY begun the ambush of the men holding Cooper and the Anthony girl hostage. Machida fired off a couple of short bursts toward the armed enemy, taking care not to hit either of the Americans with his submachine gun. The return fire was swift and furious, and one of Machida’s own soldiers was swatted by a wall of lead that chopped him to pieces. Unno growled and scooped up the dead man’s SMG, firing back at the line of men in the clearing. Machida watched as Cooper yanked the Anthony girl off her feet, disappearing behind the trees in a flash of fluid motion that confirmed the Yakuza leader’s assessment of his skill. No doubt that Cooper and the girl would be gone within moments, far beyond the reach of the mysterious defenders of the forest, as well as Hogan and his own forces. Machida grabbed Unno’s shoulder and nodded for him to follow. The surviving Yakuza gunmen all whirled as one, tearing off into the woods as the rattle of automatic fire ripped the air apart behind them. “I thought we wanted to get the girl!” Unno said as they ran. “She’s getting away. We can always find her later,” Machida told him. “Did you hear if these strangers knew about us?” “Yeah,” Unno answered. “The goons who grabbed the Americans were talking about being shadowed.” Machida leaped over a log and landed on the other side, not even breaking his stride as he continued retreating into the forest. “That means they must have some kind of sensors.” “Could be. They didn’t say,” Unno replied. “We’re leaving the mercenaries behind?” “It was time to cut our losses and run,” Machida answered. “What about the plans?” Unno asked. “The blueprints we were supposed to get.” “Hopefully these forest raiders haven’t gone through Hogan’s vehicles,” Machida told him. “We can find the blueprints and leave.” “And if not?” Unno asked. “We have backup coming,” Machida told him. “And we’re going to get the Anthony girl back.” Unno managed a smirk through his bandaged features. “Sounds like a good plan, boss.” “We’ll find out soon enough,” Machida said.
