Rock itself was a ‘crossover’ of rhythm and blues and country music, and once established it began merging with other styles. The mid-1960s saw folk rock emerge, with the 1965 release of the Byrds’ cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ and Simon & Garfunkel’s ‘The Sound of Silence’. Gram Parsons, who joined the Byrds in 1968, moved the group into country rock on Sweetheart of the Rodeo, a genre he further explored in his subsequent group the Flying Burrito Brothers. Other country rock acts included Emmylou Harris, Linda Ronstadt and Michael Nesmith (formerly with The Monkees). Western interest in Indian culture, and the music of sitar player Ravi Shankar, led to the development of raga rock, with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and the Paul Butterfield Blues Band incorporating Eastern influences in their songs; in the 1990s, UK group Kula Shaker recorded raga rock numbers like ‘Govinda’. The Doors and Chicago had elements of jazz in their music, paving the way for the jazz-rock fusion experimentations of Miles Davis, Weather Report and Chick Corea in the 1970s. Rock acts also drew on classical music, with Mason Williams’ ‘Classical Gas’ (1968) and Walter Murphy’s ‘A Fifth of Beethoven’ (1976) being big hits.
