The Informational Interview Process
1-Ask for the interview
Send an email or LinkedIn message with your reason for meeting and a suggested meeting place. You can use a standard format, but you should tailor your message for each situation.
In your message:
•Introduce yourself and mention how you got his name (e.g. referral, came across his LinkedIn profile while researching his industry, company or position). If possible, point out something you have in common.
•Explain your reason for the request. Only ask for information or advice. If asking about a job opening is the focus of your call or email, and there are no posted openings that fit your background, the person has a valid reason not to meet with you.
•Suggest a 20-minute meeting at a coffee shop near his office since he will be less likely to be distracted, and more likely to engage in casual conversation, outside of his office. However, if he would rather meet at his office or somewhere away from his office, agree without objection.
