CHAPTER 8

Claire has been anxious about seeing Jack again and can’t wait for Monday to arrive. She has noticed his absence in Serenity Palms. Since the last shirtless yoga class, she hasn't seen him other than briefly glancing out her studio window to see him chatting with restaurant guests seated at the sidewalk tables. She misses him—not just seeing him shirtless and sweaty, but actually talking to him.

Jack has missed being in Serenity Palms. Once in Miami, he fell back into his old routine of after-hour late nights with his kitchen crew. It’s all he knows in this city. He realizes how much he enjoys his new much quieter life in the suburbs. He can’t wait to get back and see Claire. He’ll drive home Sunday afternoon, pick up the ingredients he needs, and prep a few meals for her to sample on Monday.

When the day finally arrives, Claire gently knocks on the locked front door and Jack lets her in. He gives her a tour of the kitchen and wine cellar even though he did that already during the restaurant’s opening events she attended only six months ago. He is beaming as he takes her through the tour. He should be proud of this place. What he has built is so impressive. She can’t help but notice that he is slightly nervous. She has to admit that he is charming...and so handsome. Her heart is fluttering, trying to pay attention to what he is telling her while simultaneously telling her mind to stop staring at him. Just focus woman!

For his part, Jack can hardly believe his luck in getting the chance to spend time with Claire. He knows he is talking too much and probably rambling. She intrigues him and challenges him, it’s a huge turn-on. He realizes that his natural instinct is to just be himself when she is around. Claire makes him feels at ease. It’s been a long time since he felt he could just relax with a woman. Their chemistry is so natural. He knows he needs to focus. She is here for business, not to be ogled at by him. Come on, guy, focus, he thinks to himself.

“Okay, so I’ve created a few options. It’s your call on what makes the cut.”

“Great. We’ve had this request a few times, and as you know, Bob requested it again so here we are. He wants fast, easy, and healthy lunch and dinners without repeating the same foods every day.”

“I like to have a basic foundation where I can switch out the protein, veggies, and spices to create totally different dishes. It’s a simple process, but you need to know a few flavor combinations.”

“That sounds perfect and simple enough.”

“Okay. Let’s go in the kitchen and I’ll give you a sampling of what I’m thinking.”

“Oh, wow. I didn’t know you prepared food for today. I’m glad I’m hungry.”

“I’m always prepared,” Jack winks at her as he leads her back in the kitchen. He enters the walk-in refrigerator and comes back out with half a dozen meal prep containers.
