ROADBLOCKS
The difficulty lies not so much in developing new ideas as in escaping from old ones.
John Maynard Keynes
Creative block: If you tell yourself and others that you are not creative, then not only will you believe it but they will, too. You are giving yourself a genuine creative block here and closing the door on your imagination because there is no reason at all why you can’t be creative. You just need to find what makes your heart sing. It may not be creativity in the typical way – for example, drawing or writing – but in something unusual like collecting shells. Doesn’t matter how niche your interest is, if it fires you up that’s the place to discover your innate creativity.
Too serious: Another common roadblock to creativity is being too serious in your pursuit of creativity. Creativity is a spontaneous process. Creativity is in a committed relationship with joy. If you take the process and yourself too seriously you will stifle your creativity. If you are suffering from creative block, go and do something fun. You’ll be surprised how much laughter ignites your creativity and intuition.
Rigid thinking: Having a closed mind is also a creative block. If you have very rigid views or opinions on life, then this is going to limit things because creativity is all about unlimited possibility and freedom of thought. You need to open your mind to new ideas, solutions and ways of seeing and doing things and let go of the idea that there is only one right way or approach. Being creative is also about having the courage to break the rules every now and again. You need a little courage to be creative because when you are original or do something brave and new, you put yourself out there. Others are going to judge. There’s a very real chance, too, that people may not like what you create. Try to remind yourself that getting things wrong is not a crime. Mistakes are human and we learn from our mistakes.
Too comfortable: Finally, if you are a creature of habit and don’t like getting out of your comfort zone, it is going to take conscious effort for you to embrace your inner creativity. Doing things the way they have always been done, thinking about things in the way you have always done and repeating the same routines endlessly may feel comfortable but they won’t ever spark your creativity or ignite your intuition.
LOOKING AHEAD
Curiosity about life in all of its aspects, I think, is still the secret of great creative people.
Leo Burnett
Being creative helps you learn about yourself and encourages you to discover and explore your own feelings and experiences. Like all the rituals in this book, let this practice inspire you in coming days and weeks. Let creativity become your mantra. Approach things in a different way.
Try out new ideas and new ways of thinking and doing things. And don’t just stop with this creative writing ritual, devise daily creative rituals that are uniquely your own.
