Chapter 16

Luke

When I see Tassy wave to me from across the room, I excuse myself from Aunt Betty’s slurred recount of her childhood with my dad and make my way to her as quickly as the crowded space will allow. I laugh at a joke Tassy’s father throws my way, even though I don’t hear the whole punch line. I make a mental note to rescue Mama Lou, who’s sitting on the sofa rolling her eyes at something Tassy’s Aunt Margaret is whispering in her ear.

When I get to Tassy’s side, I put my hand on her waist in what I hope is a casual gesture and lean in so she can tell me whatever’s worrying her. “What is it?”

“I went upstairs to see if Lyla was okay and…”

“Tass?”

“Her and Rye were, uh, doing the deed.”

I pause as her words sink in, half amused that my fiancé can’t say ‘fucking’, half astounded by what she’s telling me. A quickie in the bathroom is Lyla’s style, that’s for damn sure. I’ve lost her at a party and only found her—plus a few new hickies—later in the night more times than I care to remember. But Rye… “Are you sure?”

Her green eyes are wide, her smile borderline villainous. “Oh, I’m positive.” She grips my arm, her long fingernails digging in her excitement. “Do you think this means they’re back together?”

My fiancé knows everything about me. Every childhood drama and memory, every lie I’ve ever told, and every thought I’ve had worth sharing since I’ve known her, so she has the scoop on Rye and Lyla. “Yeah, I guess so. Rye wouldn’t be having sex with her otherwise.”

“Oh.” She claps her hands together and jumps up and down on the spot. “This is so great.”

Despite my worry, I can’t help but laugh. “Hopefully they stay that way this time.”

“Oh, don’t be so negative,” she tells me and pulls me into a hug. “As long as they’re happy, it’s none of our business.”

There are many things I love about Tass. Her kind, sweet nature. Her loyalty. The way she gets borderline hyper after one cup of strong coffee. But, after four years together, it’s amazing that she can still surprise me, and I’m just now realizing that for an exceptionally smart woman, she’s not jaded at all. The way she views the world is so simple, so pure. As if because she expects good things to happen, they simply will. I wish I had more of that in me.

Still, her matter-of-fact way of looking at Rye and Lyla has a flush of shame creeping up my neck. I meant what I said to Lyla, that if she hurt Rye, I’d have a problem. She’s left him before and it almost killed him, so I don’t like to think about what would happen to him if she did it again.

But, maybe, like everything, there was more to it than I was able to infer. At the time, I had just been so shocked by it
