While the inspections were taking place, Raynal’s men got on with preparing to leave. They piled their arms and ammunition along the walls, keeping only a few personal belongings, including the all-important canteen and cup. By now many more Germans had arrived, all in the highest spirits over the surprising events of the morning and curious to see the fort and its garrison. As they all milled around, a lively exchange began and more than one French soldier lost a button or badge to ‘the girl back home’. Müller raised a laugh by taking the collar badge of a French machine gunner whose regimental number was also fifty-three and pinning it on himself. There was more laughter when another Frenchman offered him a piece of chocolate. In return Müller held out his canteen, expecting the man to have a quick drink and hand it back, but the thirsty man just kept on swallowing and it was only when Müller roared ‘Stop’ at the top of his voice that he meekly returned the canteen to its owner. Seeing that matters could easily get out of hand, Müller snapped out a series of sharp orders that were repeated by his NCOs in such a shower of commands that order was immediately restored.
