Epilogue

Two months later

Vlatko stood behind Zalaigh’s right side, watching the High Councilor work the

room. It was a formal party welcoming the Venuvian ambassador to Mitcov. So far

everything looked good and they weren’t expecting any trouble. Laughter drifted over the

din of conversation. He turned his gaze towards the hilarity.

Men; some who looked at Rue as a colleague and some who looked at the beautiful

blond with lust in their eyes surrounded his lover. Rue glowed, his skin golden and his

amber eyes shone bright. Vlatko glanced around and spotted one of Allaite’s guards near

Rue, but not making Rue feel hemmed in.

A hand tapped his shoulder. Turning, he saw Allaite standing there.

“I’ll take over. You’re off duty as of now, so maybe you should go make those men

jealous.” Allaite nodded towards Rue.

“Thanks.” Vlatko grinned and winked at the security officer.

He made his way through the crowd, nodding at strangers and friends alike. He

didn’t let anyone stop him. As he got closer to the group, he noticed three men circle

around his lover. One of them glanced over his shoulder and fear shot through Vlatko. It

was an I.U.M. assassin.

He shoved people out of the way. One of the assassins reached for Rue’s shoulder.

“Rue, down.”

Rue dropped to the floor without questioning. Vlatko was glad he’d worked with the

thief on what to do if someone ever came after him. He wrapped his hand around the grip

of his laser and drew as he closed in on the assassins. Allaite and Rellam backed him up.

Vlatko saw them surround the other two men. Rue rolled away, clearing the area so

Vlatko wouldn’t have to worry about his safety.

First shot was for the man closest to Rue. Vlatko didn’t wait to see if the shot landed.

He swung and hit the other guy in the leg. He aimed for the kneecap, one of the most

vulnerable parts on a human. By then, he was in close enough to swing his fist holding

the gun at the third man’s face. The satisfying crunch of the man’s nose breaking made

Vlatko smile. These weren’t his fellow assassins. They weren’t enhanced or genetically

altered. Three would have told the created assassins the possibility of a cure existed. He

hoped they would have defected.

All three assassins were down within minutes. Vlatko stood over them, gesturing for

the Mitcovian security guards to drag the two living would-be killers out of the room.

One of the servants covered the first assassin with a tablecloth. Vlatko’s shot nailed the

man in the chest. Regret didn’t exist in Vlatko’s heart for this man’s death. Even though

Vlatko had made a promise never to kill again, he would murder anyone if it kept Rue

safe.

Tucking his laser away, he turned to find Rue on his feet and in the middle of a

crowd. Rue’s amber eyes met his and all Vlatko wanted was to hold him, making sure his

lover was safe. He slid between the men, wrapping his arm around Rue’s waist and

crushed the slender body tight to him. He took Rue’s plump lips with authority. Rue

entwined his arms around Vlatko’s neck and tangled a leg around Vlatko’s thigh.
