Where to seek help for your child will depend on what you or your pediatrician thinks is wrong. There are some issues that can be managed within your pediatrician’s scope of practice. These may be minor issues common among children of your child’s age, such as an innocent heart murmur.

Most major cities have a specialty hospital for children. Here you will find all types of medical specialists who have expertise in anything from disease to developmental issues. Specially trained health-care providers such as physical therapists, occupational therapists, and speech therapists might be able to help with your child’s developmental issues. If there isn’t a local children’s hospital, ask your pediatrician if he knows of any local programs for babies with developmental problems. Many states have specialized agencies just for this purpose. If you have a baby who is at a higher risk of developmental delays because of a preterm birth or other issue, you may be given this information before your baby leaves the hospital.

There are also many national and international organizations for children who have developmental delays or difficulties. These can easily be found online or by asking your practitioner for local resources.
