If you have a long gap between your last role/position

Note: Use the most appropriate response based on your personal situation, and tailor the context appropriately.

After being let go from my previous company, I took some time off to reflect on what is important to me in my career, and to ensure I had time to update my skills and perspective ahead of moving into my next role.

It was important to me to ensure our children had a parent at home to ensure we established a solid foundation for their growth and development; now that they are <XYZ> I am ready to re-enter the work force and contribute my skills and experience to the success of your company.

AVOID : I’ve been interviewing for the last <XYZ> months / looking for a position.

Managers are very sensitive to someone that has been unemployed for a long duration AND has been interviewing that entire time – if other companies did not want to hire you, it makes us wonder why and tends to influence us to not be the ones to take a risk where others weren’t willing. A much better answer is taking time off to travel, for family, to recharge and refresh your skills, etc.
