15 Drunk.
âWe couldnât do anything,â Pepperidge said. âThe police were already there.â
My skin crawled.
âWhat time was that?â
âMy chap got there just before noon.â He took another spoonful of soup.
âHe was fast,â I said.
âAdequate.â
âNew to the field?â
âOh, no. Been here a year.â
âEnglish?â
âChinese. How are you feeling?â
âBit skewed, still. Listen, when you debriefed him, did he say how long he thought the police had been there when he turned up?â
âHe said not long. They hadnât brought the body out.â
âHow long did he stay?â
âA good hour. He was in a Jeifang, made outââ
âWhatâs that?â
âSorry - truck, big as a dinosaur, always breaking down, so it was good enough cover, he had the bonnet up, got some spanners out.â
âHeâs Bureau?â
âYes. Reports to Hong Kong.â His yellow eyes were on me suddenly. âYouâre active, are you?â
âCall it eighty percent.â He hadnât been satisfied when Iâd told him I was a bit skewed. I shouldnât have done that, got to play by the book, and the book says the shadow executive has to give his director in the field his exact condition when asked for. All right, say eighty percent. Fully active would mean I was fit enough to do anything at all, nothing barred, run a mile flat out or swim submerged or deal with any sort of attack and defeat it and get clear. I couldnât do that, not as I felt now: the head was still a degree dizzy and I could feel the effect of the altitude in the lungs.
âLook,â I said, âthey couldnât have got onto it that fast, I mean from their end.â They couldnât in other words have put down that agent as missing and started a search for him and found him at the temple: there hadnât been time. âSomeone must have heard the shots and reported it.â
Pepperidge was quiet for a moment. The inference was there all right and it gave me the creeps: if anyone had heard those shots they could have seen me leaving the temple soon afterward, and given the police my description.
âPossible,â Pepperidge said at last.
Two people came in, peasants, slamming the door, and it reached my nerves. âItâs not very good,â I said, âis it?â
âNot very.â Spooned some soup. âNil desperandum.â
Easy to say. The KCCPC had suspected that Xingyu Baibing was here in Lhasa because heâd blown it at the embassy in Beijing, and now theyâd found that body it wouldnât be long before they identified it even though Iâd made a gesture and changed coats and taken his papers, and theyâd check their assignment roster and find that the agent posted on watch at the apothecaryâs wasnât there anymore and thatâd be all theyâd need.
âHow did you do it?â Pepperidge asked me. The agent?â
This was for Norfolk, for the new recruits. âI broke the thyroid cartilage with a half-fist, immediate internal hemorrhage.â
âHe had a gun?â
âYes.â
âAnd he fired it.â
âYes.â He could smell the cordite on me.
âHow much light was there?â
âNot much. Practically dark.â
Tell those poor bloody children at Norfolk to try that one against a loaded gun and theyâd get their brains blown out.
