Bolan steered away from the death scene as the warble of an ambulance sounded in the near distance. The paramedics wouldn't be able to do anything for Diana, or whoever she was.
The big man felt anger, directed partly at himself for being suckered in by a beautiful woman. Another part abhorred the sheer waste: a lovely woman, intelligent, charmingâand a professional killer. Now she was nothing more than a spreading stain on the streets of Chicago.
Bolan turned his mind from the minor tragedy that had been played out minutes earlier. The woman had made her choice. It was her call.
He glanced at his watch, noting that the hands had crept close to three o'clock. Theoretically he could still hit D'Angelo's house before morning, but after considering the matter rationally, he decided it would be better to postpone the hit until the next day. D'Angelo's place would be a tough nut to crack, and Bolan had no inclination to give an edge to the Mafia hard-men by arriving on the scene already combat weary.
He decided against going back to his hotel. Clearly his cover had been blown, and there would likely be more company once Diana's death became common knowledge.
He stopped at a sprawling highway motelâpicked purely at randomâand waited in the lot for several minutes watching the traffic in case someone followed him in. When he was satisfied that he hadn't been tailed, he checked in with a sleepy attendant.
As the warrior stretched out on the bed he wondered where this mission was headed. He'd just have to shake D'Angelo's tree and see what fell to the ground. With the details of the next day's battle plan drifting through his mind, Bolan fell into a fitful sleep.
