After a night of sleep, Frank felt refreshed and ready for action. His first stop was the Bayport Country Club. As he strolled onto the ninth green, he saw a distinguished-looking man with silvery hair drive up in a golf cart. Though the snow was melting, the golf course was still more white than green.
"Excuse me," Frank said, approaching the cart. "Are you Mr. Abernathy?"
"That's right," Mr. Abernathy replied as he stepped out of the golf cart.
"I'm Frank Hardy, and I was told you could tell me something about Tamara Fairbanks."
"You want some dirt on her, I bet," Abernathy said, pulling a club from his golf bag.
"I just want the truth."
"Well," Abernathy said, looking straight at Frank, "it depends on whose side you're on. . . ."
Frank wasn't sure what to make of this, but he knew an opening when he saw one. "I'm not on anybody's side," he said, hedging. "I'm just trying to find out who's behind an attempt on her father's life."
"Oh, yes," Abernathy said, walking to the tee-off point. "I read about his disappearance in the paper this morning."
Frank followed Abernathy. "What can you tell me about Tamara Fairbanks?"
Abernathy pulled a red golf ball from his pocket and set it on a tee. He swung a few practice strokes. "The reason I play golf every morning," Abernathy explained, "is because I have nothing better to do. I used to be the president of a major corporation. But two years ago Tamara Fairbanks masterminded a hostile take-over of my company. Do you know what that means?"
"She managed to buy up over fifty percent of the company's stock," Frank answered, "giving herself power to do whatever she wanted with the company. Including getting rid of the president. So now you play golf every morning."
"Very good." Abernathy smirked, "My contacts in the business world have informed me that Ms. Fairbanks is planning a take-over of an even bigger company—the Fairbanks Corporation."
Frank paused a moment. "You mean," Frank said with disbelief, "she's planning a take-over of her father's own company? A company that she herself works for?"
"That's what I hear," Abernathy confirmed. "Very few people know about this, but I understand she's been working on it behind her father's back for the past year or so."
"Isn't her father too sharp to let this happen?" Frank asked.
"If there's one person in this world more ruthless than Tamara Fairbanks," Abernathy proclaimed, "it's her father, Ian. In fact, I hear he's hired a couple of spies to keep an eye on Tamara. But the Fairbanks Corporation is in serious debt these days, and unless Fairbanks senior can come up with some pretty hefty capital, he may not be able to stop his daughter's take-over bid."
"He won't be able to stop it if he's dead either," Frank said. "Which brings me to my last question. Do you think Tamara Fairbanks tried to kill her father so she could win this take-over game?"
"I couldn't say," Abernathy shook his head. "But I sure wouldn't put it past her.
