Chapter 9
Castle Attack
Sing opened the door and stepped inside the trailer, with Frank and Callie close behind. The trailer was pitch-black except for the colored prism rotating in the air.
Sing flipped on the lights and carefully looked around. There was no sign of Phil. Wherever Phil is, Frank thought, I hope he stays there.
"Someone's been breaking into my system lately," Sing said. "You can't be too careful." He snapped his fingers to start the computer and began typing on the keyboard. After a moment, he stopped and touched the side of the computer.
Callie glanced at Frank. "What's the matter?" Frank asked Sing.
"I'm checking it for warmth," Sing answered. Frank decided not to press the issue.
Sing switched on his laser printer and began printing a file. Frank wished he knew what Alvin Sing was thinking. When the file finished printing, Sing collected the pages and escorted Frank and Callie out of the trailer.
"Are you going back to the banquet?" Frank asked casually when they were outside.
"No," Sing replied. "I have an appointment at nine. Good night, you two." Frank watched Sing walk off into the darkness.
"Follow him," Frank said to Callie. "See where he goes and who he meets. Let's hook up at the pizza place around ten."
"I'm going to bill you for my time," Callie joked as she headed after Sing.
Frank immediately started off toward the castle. Then he remembered something - Phil! He made a sharp U-turn and returned to the trailer, picking his way back in.
"Phil," Frank whispered in the darkness. "Coast clear." He heard the trunk open and could just make out Phil climbing out of it.
"There's armor inside there," Phil complained, "and let me tell you it's not very comfortable."
"Hey," Frank retorted, "you're lucky I didn't leave you in there all night."
Phil then left the park to go print out the floppy disk he had copied in a safer place, and Frank ran back to the castle. As Frank entered the Great Hall, he was glad to see the banquet still in progress. No catastrophe yet, he figured as he made his way to Joe's table.
"Just in time for dessert," Joe said. Chet and Iola had joined some other volunteers at another table.
"And I've got some sweet news for you," Frank replied, taking a seat. He quickly filled Joe in on the discovery as they both pretended to watch the Juggler's performance.
"So Sing may be masterminding this and paying Kev Dyson to help him," Joe suggested.
"Maybe," Frank said. "One for profit, one for vengeance. Still a lot of maybes here, though."
As they spoke, Frank and Joe both glanced at Dyson, who was now seated across the hall. A young woman was serving bowls of pudding at the table, and Dyson waved a hand, indicating he didn't want any. The dessert came around the room, and soon Frank and Joe both had a bowl of rice pudding in front of them.
"I'm starving," Frank said, digging into the pudding with a wooden spoon. "How was dinner?"
"The chicken was great," Joe replied.
