The First Day Of Christmas
The day of our wedding started with the blast of trumpets. A crowd had gathered in front of the castle to hear the Royal Proclamation of our marriage. Tenebris was required to be present with the other nobles as they stood and addressed the crowd from the outside terrace four stories above the excited citizenry. There were beautiful banners in deep blue and gold unfurled with our sigil on it portraying the three horned Ram and the symbol of our House, an âMâ with a line drawn down from the center for a sword, a symbol of safe journeys and our willingness to defend what is ours.
I never saw our flags flying without feeling a thrill that I was the Princess of our fair kingdom.
As I bathed for my wedding day, I heard my father drone on and on, giving a speech. There would be choirs of eunuchs, boysâ choirs to sing our anthems and entertainment by jesters and clowns to appease and delight the crowds. I felt excited and hopeful. Though I was not at all sure about WHO I was marrying, I knew that I was clever enough to get out of it if I wanted to.
And even if our marriage was annulled, I would NOT have to return any of the wedding presents. I looked forward to seeing the jewels, treasure fine silks, spices, sweets and other offerings that would be presented to us.
At last I was ready. I stood with my maids about me and gazed into the giant full-length mirror, smiling with satisfaction. My flaming red hair had been gathered up on top of my head in a diamond clip shaped like a crown with artfully arranged cascades of curls framing my face and shoulders.
My dress was modest, but well fitted, with pearl buttons front and back and tiny crystals decorating the bodice, the sleeves and the train of my gown, which was made from taffeta and silk. I loved the way it sounded when I moved, and the train was so elaborate that I had no less than four young servants, dressed in silk livery that matched my gown, to carry it so that it would not touch the floor.
âOh Princess,â my ladies gasped. âYou are more beautiful than even your mother was on her own wedding day!â
Looking into the mirror, I was amazed myself. I was glowing, and looked taller and more regal than I ever remembered. I felt a tingling thrill from the tips of my toes that were encased in silk stockings and white kid shoes to the top of my head.
My walk down the aisle on my fatherâs arm will always be a blur. Unaware of what was going on around me, my focus as I walked in measured steps toward where Tenebris stood. In front of the altar beside the Bishop was the handsome face of my husband to be. I blushed with pleasure to see the appreciation and desire in his dark, mysterious eyes.
