That couldn’t happen again.

Magnolia seemed happy to pretend like nothing had happened between us, so we spent the next several days in an uneasy, pissed-off stalemate.

That gave me plenty of time to think about what she had said.

Was it possibly true that she simply loved Callaway Farms?

Or was that just a lie?

Even if she did love Callaway Farms, what would it matter?

I didn’t want her here anyway.

She was working so hard she had discarded her sweatshirt and was only in a long-sleeved T-shirt. We drove over through the woods and into town, Magnolia still keeping an offended silence until I pointed out some of old Farmer Nash’s mares in the field, and then Magnolia erupted with anger and let out a blistering rant savaging everything from what Farmer Nash fed his mares to the barn he kept them in.

Since I agreed with her, I said nothing, but I thought she looked incredibly damn tempting sitting in the driver’s seat beside me, her blue eyes flashing, the little freckles on her nose standing up as she demonstrated what proper care of foals should look like.

Goddamn my own niece as a little she-devil succubus from hell!
