After school, Dorothy scampered up the road towards home.
âSlow down, Dorothy!â called Florence. âWe waited ages for you to finish cleaning slates. The least you can do is walk slowly for the girls.â Behind her, Margaret and Elsie were struggling up the dusty road, their cheeks pink with exertion.
âSorry,â said Dorothy, waiting for her sisters. âI need to get this to George, thatâs all.â She held out the final part of the script, which sheâd managed to retrieve from the dustbin when her teacher wasnât looking. It was slightly smudged from Hectorâs apple core, but otherwise it was fine. âI finally figured out how to end it,â she said as the girls traipsed up the hill. âThe final scene can show the main character as an old woman looking through photographs of all the wonderful plays sheâs acted in and all the places sheâs travelled to.â
It was the perfect ending.
Sheâd had the idea when she was looking at the faint wrinkles around Miss Armstrongâs eyes as she led the class in the Good Manners pledge at the end of the day. The children often wondered how old their teacher was. (Nobody knew, but they all suspected she was very old.)
âThat sounds lovely, Dorothy,â said Margaret.
âYes, just lovely,â said Elsie. âHave you written my part yet?â
âIâve written all the parts,â said Dorothy. âI just need to take this at Georgeâs house so he can do one final check. Then weâll start making copies for everyone else. Thank goodness Mrs Lin bought us fountain pens. I donât know how we would have done it in time with Ivyâs old dip pen.â
âCan I have a turn with your fountain pen?â asked Margaret. âIt looks so nice.â
âIt is lovely,â said Dorothy. âItâs like writing with silk! But I need to make sure it has enough ink for copying out the scripts. If thereâs ink left over after that, you can try it.â
Elsie frowned. âWhat aboutââ
âAnd you,â said Dorothy, patting Elsie on the head. âIâd let you try it out too, Florence, but your letters to Freddy are too long and romantic. Youâd probably need five fountain pens just to get through one letter.â
Margaret and Elsie giggled.
âSounds like jealousy to me,â said Florence.
âJealous of your sappy letters? I think not. Oh, that reminds me.â Dorothy stopped suddenly and pulled out an envelope from her skirts. Mr and Mrs Alfred McIntyre was written on the front in Miss Armstrongâs prim writing. âWhat am I going to do with this?â
While Dorothy was wiping slates, Miss Armstrong had penned a letter to Dorothyâs parents. Sheâd handed it to her with a sour, âNext time, keep on task.â
âYouâre supposed to give it to Mama and Father, obviously,â said Florence. âThatâs how letters work.â
âHmm ⦠I think this might be a better place.â Dorothy tucked it into a bush by the side of the road.
Margaret gasped. âDorothy, you canât! Miss Armstrong said you need to give it to Mama and Father!â
âOh, they donât want to read that, trust me,â said Dorothy.
