53. HoT FLASHES

When women enter their menopausal years, up to two-thirds of them experience hot flashes, the sudden onset of intense heat or warmth in the face, neck, and chest. They can be accompanied by rapid heartbeat, flushed red skin, and sweating. Each woman’s experience is different. Some have them for only a short period of time, while others continue to get them throughout their lives. Whether it happens a few times a day or several times an hour, the severity of hot flashes tends to decrease over time. Around the time of menopause, a woman’s reproductive hormone balance changes and the hypothalamus, which regulates the body temperature, may also be experiencing some changes. It is thought that these two may play a role in the onset of hot flashes. When the body temperature rises, the blood vessels near the surface of the skin dilate in an attempt to cool the body down. Women may opt to take hormones to prevent hot flashes if they are severe or interfere with daily life. Estrogen or a combination of estrogen and progesterone are commonly prescribed. Antidepressants and antiseizure medications are also given to reduce hot flashes. These drugs can increase the risk of breast cancer, stroke, heart disease, and blood clots. They can also cause irritability, anxiety, nausea, and fatigue. These are just some of the side effects.

There are many testimonials on the effectiveness of apple cider vinegar in the treatment of hot flashes. While there is no medical evidence to suggest it works, the lack of data simply means it hasn’t been tested in a controlled study. The fact that many women swear by it means that it is a probable alternative treatment to medical drugs. At the very least, drinking apple cider vinegar provides a safe and natural option with other health benefits, including increased weight loss and decreased high blood pressure. According to the Mayo Clinic, a high body mass index in women is associated with a higher frequency of hot flashes. Lowering weight may help reduce the incidence or severity of hot flashes in these women. Women experiencing hot flashes also have higher systolic blood pressure.83 Acetic acid, the main component of apple cider vinegar, was found to significantly reduce blood pressure by decreasing compounds that constrict the arteries and increase blood volume, both of which lead to higher blood pressure.84 It also contains chlorogenic acid, which was proven to reduce blood pressure in mildly hypertensive people without any side effects.85 Women have reported taking anywhere from 2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to 6 tablespoons in divided doses each day. It would be advisable to begin with a smaller amount and gradually increase the dose until you experience improvement. The vinegar can be diluted in water, apple juice, tea, or a drink sweetened with honey, maple syrup, or stevia.
