Lost Horse Mill

Five years later, J. D. Ryan joined the partnership and hauled in a massive steam-powered 10-stamp mill. The mill crushed the ore from the mine. The resulting powder was mixed with water to form a slurry, which was treated with mercury to separate the gold from the debris. The amalgam was then smelted to extract the gold, which was shipped in 200-pound bricks to Banning. To power the steam mill, Ryan ran a pipeline 3.5 miles from the well at his ranch to the mine. The hills around the mine are still sparsely vegetated because the junipers and yuccas were felled as fuel for the steam mill.

According to Keys, Ryan caught Lang stealing gold from the night shift and forced Lang to sell out. Lang later retrieved some of the bullion that he had secreted away near the mine, but he died of exposure along Keys View Road in the winter of 1925. Keys buried him near the Lost Horse Mine turnoff. As you hike this popular trail to the mine, imagine this Wild West drama unfolding, keep an eye out for hidden treasure, and take care that your hiking partner doesn’t double-cross you.
