When the body accumulates too much body fat, it increases the risk of health problems like diabetes, heart disease, and certain cancers. Losing weight can improve or prevent any weight-induced conditions. Losing weight means losing fat, which accumulates on the body when more calories are eaten than burned. The body stores these excess calories as fat. Exercising and eating a healthy diet with appropriate calorie intake will help burn the stored fat and reduce body weight.
Inhaling citronella oil decreased body weight in male rats fed a high-fat diet over five weeks compared to the control group of rats who did not inhale the oil. It was found that the rats inhaling cit-ronella oil had decreased appetite and consumed fewer calories.95 Peppermint, grapefruit, and fennel oils can improve weight loss efforts by suppressing food cravings. Grapefruit oil also boosts energy for sustained calorie-burning exercise. Ginger oil is ther-mogenic, meaning it burns calories by converting them into heat. Eating foods that encourage the body to produce heat can increase metabolism by as much as 5 percent and fat-burning potential by as much as 16 percent.96 Lemongrass is also thought to be a ther-mogenic oil. Dilute these oils in apricot kernel oil and dab on the bottom of the feet. The wrists are another good place and can be inhaled periodically.
