WEEK SIX

6. You also push the back of your head against the wall so that the back of your neck is close to or flush against the wall and seems to stretch upward. To get a better feel for this, pull in your chin and use the tip of your right index finger to push your head back from the point directly under your nose (the Yen Chong point you learned about in Week Ones Taoist Self-Massage Rejuvenation: Massaging the Lower Nose).

7. Inhale and relax. Do 6 times or more at each session this week. *

This is an important exercise for much of the future work. When your spine is flat against a wall, reach one hand behind you and try to push it between your lower back and the wall. If your hand squeezes through, you must increase the tilt of your lower sacrum toward your perineum.

Try pushing a hand through behind your neck. If there is space (and there probably will be) straighten your neck more. The muscles and tendons in the back of the neck can be in a lot of pain. The pulling in on the eyes is useful in reducing the strain and opening up blockages here. When you pull up on the perineum and in on the eyes you may feel something happening inside your spine. You may feel a tingle or a rush of energy up your spine. Activating the Three Pumps pushes spinal fluid up the backbone. Your Jing begins to rise. Perseverance is required.

Squeezing the Hands

Another important concept in Yi Chin Ching is squeezing or compressing the muscles. The idea is simple: upon exhalation, you just tighten and squeeze the muscles as if you were compressing them into your bones. It requires very little movement. We will begin by squeezing the muscles and tendons of the hands.

1. Hold both hands in front of you with palms facing each other, four to six inches apart. Your fingers are held open and apart. Your elbows are bent and face downward.
