Taking a Cutting

Adapted from Herbal Remedy Gardens, by Dorie Byers (Storey Books, 1999)

Prepare clean containers and a light seed-starting mix. Straight vermiculite works well. With sharp scissors, cut 3 to 6 inches off the chosen stem just below a leaf node (where leaves emerge from the stem). Strip off the lower leaves, and remove any blooms from the cutting. If you are using rooting hormone, dip the stem into it. Insert the lower half of the cutting into the potting mix. Firm the mix around the stem, making sure there are no air pockets. Place the cutting in a warm spot out of direct light. Lightly mist with room-temperature water twice a day. Do not overwater; the soil should be kept damp but not waterlogged. Be patient. It will take several weeks for roots to form. You will know that the cuttings have taken root when a plant resists being pulled up with gentle tugging or there is new top growth.
