Racism as a Determinant of Health[xlix]

The effect of racism on health has predominantly focused on how it affects health via several recognized pathways, many of which we mentioned before. The effect that racism has on health can lead to the inability to secure stable housing, stable employment, education, and brings more exposure to risk factors such as racial violence, gang violence, and crime. Studies have also focused on the negative mental health outcomes people experience as a result of racism such as hypervigilance, anticipatory or attributional anxiety, and continual thinking on sad or dark thoughts, which is called rumination.
