Secondary biomass sources include:

• Forest residues from tree felling made into wood chips

• Wood residues in the pulp and paper industry

• Wheat straw

• Bagasse – sugar cane residue

• Rice husks

• Animal wastes

• Sewage sludge

• Municipal solid waste

• Commercial and industrial biomass wastes (e.g. oils, tyres)

Different feedstocks can be treated thermally or bio-chemically to produced different energy sources and/ or fuels.

By comparison, today’s industrial roundwood (logs) production is 0.03 worldwatts, while the global harvest of major crops (cereals, oil crops, sugar crops, roots, tubers and pulses) is about 0.1 worldwatt. The market potential to increase land-based biomass is 0.4 worldwatts.
