Chapter 6

Riley watched Toby and grew more concerned as the night continued on. The man who was consuming more and more of his thoughts and heart kept moving, but Riley could tell he needed rest. Finally, he had had enough. Signaling for Conor to cover for him behind the bar, Riley stepped into the kitchen. The object of his obsession stood at the sink, not moving and staring at the wall as if it held the answer to every question in the universe.

Paulo looked at him and motioned him over. “He’s dead on his feet, but refuses to stop. Something about not wanting to disappoint you and needing the money. I think if he took a break and sat down he’d be asleep before his ass hit the chair.”

“Yeah, I think the same thing. Can you get along without him for the rest of the night?”

Paulo gave him a look he was too familiar with, exasperated chef. “I got along just fine before he came along, though he does make life a helluva a lot easier. Take him and look after him. In fact, I think you should take the rest of the night off, too.”

Riley smiled. “We do think a lot alike.”

When he reached Toby’s side, he found the man’s eyes were closed and he was leaning heavily on the counter, asleep on his feet.

“Oh, baby,” he murmured as he lifted Toby into his arms and turned to the hall to his office.

“Wha’, oh shit.” Toby jerked awake and began to struggle.

“Shhh, baby, it’s all right. I’ve got you,” Riley assured the man as he stepped into his office.

“No, I’ve got to get back to work,” Toby protested as Riley set him down.

Before the little man could move, Riley clamped a hand on his shoulder to hold him in place. “No, you are taking the rest of the night off and getting some sleep.”

Riley was shocked when Toby’s eyes went wide and then filled with tears. “No, I can’t. I have to work. I need the money.”

“Why are you trying to kill yourself? You’re so tired you were asleep on your feet in the kitchen. Taking a night off won’t jeopardize your job,” Riley assured the man even as Toby began shaking his head back and forth.

“No, I’ve got to work,” Toby said as he tried to pull away from Riley’s hold.

Knowing the man was too tired to be completely coherent, Riley tightened his grip. “Okay, baby, you can go back to work, but you need to take your break first. Let’s sit on the couch and neck for a while.”

Toby frowned at him then nodded. “Okay.”

Riley sat at one end of the couch then pulled Toby to lie across his lap. The man was barely awake as Riley kissed him gently. He then pushed the man’s head to rest on his chest and cuddled him. He rubbed one hand up and down the man’s side and felt Toby relax and quickly fall asleep.

Once he was sure he would not wake up again, Riley shifted him so he could stand.
