Chapter 11
With so many people arriving that day, Lady Sarah chose not to go down to the village. Instead, she waited to receive her guests. Mr Hunter tried to stay with her at the house, but the young lady had reminded him of Thomas and Edward's desire to go out on the lake. Alex had begrudgingly agreed to go down to the village to keep his word, and left Lady Sarah in Mrs Bosworth's care at the house.
The village was filling with people rather rapidly. It wouldn't be until the following evening when all the guests of the village would be there, but even so, Mr Hunter thought that there were far more people in the village than last year.
âGood morning, Mr Hunter,â Constable Cantello said as he spotted the hunter fighting his way towards the inn.
âGood morning, Any word on the two people in the woods?â Alex asked when he was close enough to speak softly and still be heard.
âNot a sign of them. We're just having a quick bite inside before we get back out there. Feel like joining us?â the constable asked brightly.
Alex nodded and followed the policeman inside. Constable McIntyre, Clowes, McGill and Meyers were all sat around a table with Constable Evans. As Mr Hunter joined them with Constable Cantello, he reflected on how funny it was to find himself in the company of the constabulary when not that long ago they had arrested him on suspicion of murder.
The inn was full of laughter and familiar faces. Some of them were people that Alex knew from the streets of Chester. Others were young gentlemen and ladies that would be staying at Grangeback for the length of the festival.
As Alex was sat drinking with the policemen, the door to the inn opened, and Mrs Ruth Cooper entered.
The older woman had a severe look on her face. She looked briefly around and then left with the same expression she had worn when she entered.
âWell, that's not good,â Mr Hunter murmured under his breath.
Mrs Ruth Cooper was not a bad woman, she was simply a woman in pain. She had lost both her husband and son in less than ideal circumstances. After the death of her husband, her son had been her pride and joy. In fact, he had become her main reason for living. He was a pampered child, but a good man none-the-less. He had once found himself interested in pursuing the attentions of Lady Sarah, but when it had become clear to him that her heart lay elsewhere, he had taken up with Miss Elizabeth Wessex instead.
Miss Wessex had once been engaged to Mr Harry Taylor, but he had broken off the engagement. Miss Wessex never knew the reasons behind Harry's decision, as the young man had kept those to himself.
He had broken off the engagement because it had become clear to him that Miss Wessex was not suited to a life in the service of one such as Lady de Mandeville. Rather than prolong
