We exited the small room that stood behind the area where Dameon had caned Llewellyn, and traversed through the sea of bodies swarming into the various kinky enclosures. The moon shone brightly, lighting our way, while a cool breeze blew between the trees. There were fire pits placed sporadically along the wide path, with food stalls selling various takeaways.

“What’s over there?” Officer Graham said.

They had a black curtain tied between two trees, and a tall man wearing dark jeans and a white vest exited. I caught sight of what was happening behind him and had to know more.

Officer Graham followed closely behind me. “What are they doing?” he said.

When a meaty hand rested on my chest, pushing me away, I pulled out my badge and asked him politely to step aside. The tall bouncer nodded and allowed us entrance.

A crowd of people filled the space. Some leaned against trees while others sat on the rocks Mother Nature had left behind. In the distance, they had suspended a man in the air with sharp hooks. I’d expected to see him in pain, but he smiled lazily and waved at everyone.

“I don’t understand it,” Officer Graham said beside me, gawking at the man. “That looks like so much pain.”

“I know,” I said, zipping my jacket up. Another breeze blew through the crowd, making everyone huddle into themselves. “Let’s walk around one last time. I don’t know what we’re looking for, but let’s keep moving. I’m freezing my nuts off standing here.”

“Sure,” Officer Graham said, turning to follow me.

As we approached the exit where the large bouncer stood, Officer Crick neared, his cheeks red.

“Where have you been?” I asked.

“Flat tyre,” Officer Crick said, rubbing his nose. His eyes darted from us to the man behind us. “That looks awful, anyway. Have you found anything interesting yet?” He sniffed.

“We interviewed a man who had a play session with three of the women,” I said. “And now we’re just walking around before heading home.”

“Okay,” Officer Crick said, scratching behind his neck and then his forearm.

“What’s up with you?” Officer Graham said. “You’re more fidgety than usual.”

“Nothing,” Officer Crick said, glancing away. “Just tired.” He walked ahead of us and stopped at one of the food stalls to buy a taco.

“Has he ever behaved like that before?” I asked.

Officer Graham shook his head. “No, but then again, I never interact with him outside of work.”

“Okay,” I said, still staring at Officer Crick, who fidgeted more than I’d ever seen him fidget before. I needed to change the subject. “I know I told you to hold off with that other investigation, but what was the last thing you did there?” We passed Officer Crick as he paid for his taco, then I glanced at another session where they tied a naked woman to a tree and whipped her back.

“I found footage the night the evidence went missing, but can’t tell who the person is,” he said, also staring at the naked woman being whipped. “They’re wearing black and covered their face.
