Chapter Twelve

Zippor stood in the corridor outside the Zyrgin’s office. The instinct that his people had been born with said they were superior. That he should punish her for her insolence. The thinking that had been bred into every warrior with genetic engineering thousands of centuries ago shouted a negation of the very concept that the Zyrgin empire could be at fault. Another part of that instinct screamed at him because he had not been there to protect his breeder when she was vulnerable.

“Warrior.”

Zippor swung around to face the Zyrgin. It was never a good idea to let such a powerful being catch you unaware. Normally, he knew by the surge of power filling the space that their leader was close.

Zippor bowed his head. “My Zyrgin.” For the first time, it took effort to put his fist over his heart. The Zyrgin had given them purpose when other warriors had rejected them. He’d never treated them like inferior Scars and never failed to call them warriors.

The Zyrgin stared at him, then abruptly said, “My business can wait. Come in and tell me what is bothering you.”

The Zyrgin didn’t wait for Zippor to speak but said, “When a warrior finds his breeder, he is not supposed to change.”

“Yes, my leader.”

“But a wise warrior will listen to his breeder. Make her concerns his.”

“Yes, my leader.” How did he know Zippor wanted to talk to him about Arealana?

“Tell me what bothers you, warrior?”

Zippor opened his mouth, but he didn’t know how to put the thoughts and feelings swirling inside him into words. “I am loyal to the empire.”

“You proved that beyond doubt when you saved the Parena. You are not ready yet to comprehend what a great thing you have done the day you saved my breeder.”

Zippor bowed his head. “We took Solaria all those centuries ago because they took our people.”

“Most of our females,” the Zyrgin corrected.

“I think—”

The Zyrgin waited with uncharacteristic patience.

“It is wrong to—”

“Speak up, warrior. You are not an indecisive citizen.”

“Fourteen-year-old females should not be made to work in the camps.”

The Zyrgin was quiet for a long time. It took all Zippor’s self-control not to step back from the Zyrgin. He knew that the Zyrgin, the being he respected above all others, knew that small females are used to work in the camps.

“Our empire has thrived for countless centuries. One of the things that has endured is our hatred of the people who took our females.”

“That does not justify using small females as slave labor.”

“You are correct. We are stagnating, and the sabotage and killing of helpless infants is a symptom of that stagnation. The fact that this practice on Solaria has endured for centuries is not a good reflection on us.”

“You plan change?”

“Carefully, warrior, very carefully.”

The Zyrgin smiled when he saw Zippor’s confusion. “I am not about to give up any piece of my empire. But change is needed. History has shown that empires are destroyed in times of change.” His smile turned savage. “Nobody will destroy anything I own.
