They met with Jackson even though none of them had yet forgiven him for what heâd made them do to the captive Cogmoreâs. Mike went off to meet with Parsons.
Jackson led them to a filthy room with dented walls peeling paint and light fixtures that hung from the ceiling like theyâd been yanked out. There was a wall of monitors against one wall and nothing else besides a single table in the middle of the room.
Jackson said, âThe reason most of this place looks like a bomb hit it is because it did. We were infiltrated last year and the Cogmoreâs hit us hard. They killed three units before we wiped them all out.â
Eve asked, âHow many Cogmoreâs were there?â
âThousands. It was a concerted effort to get rid of us once and for all. Thatâs why we run round-the-clock sweeps now and eliminate threats on sight.â
Jackson waved towards the monitors. âAnd itâs why we have those things. Now we can see everything within a twenty mile radius of this building. Once we get a few more soldiers based here, weâll make someone a dedicated surveillance officer who can stay with the cameras and keep a constant vigil of our surroundings. Until then, we only use this room at night when our patrols are less effective.â He pointed at Zero. âYou go and get recharged just now. Youâll take the watch with me tonight.â
Zero hated the notion of staying up all night with Jackson the jerk, but if manning the monitors was part of the job then heâd do what had to be done.
He said, âGoodnight then,â and left them.
He walked back to the living quarters and plugged in for a quick charge.
He awoke from his charge. Mike was in the room with him. He locked him in a stare and said incredulously, âYouâve only been charging for twenty minutes. Thereâs no way youâre fully charged.â
He knew he was right. He felt drowsy still. He said, âSometimes I pop awake in the middle of a charge. I donât know why.â
âThatâs impossible. Charging shuts you down until itâs over.â
âWell then thereâs something wrong with my unit because it happens all the time.â
Mike stared at him as though he didnât quite believe it. He changed the subject. âI relayed your idea to Parsons and he said heâll think about approaching the Beetars with it.â
âWhat idea?â
âYour idea to evacuate the buildings and nuke this area.â
âOh.â
âI doubt theyâll consider it though. As long as they have the situation contained, they wonât change a thing.â
âThank you anyway.â
âHey, if they go for it and it gets rid of most of the attackers, Iâll be thanking you.â
He felt weary. He said, âIâll see you when I wake up.â
Mike watched as he closed his eyes. Right before he fell back to sleep he heard him mutter, âThatâs the weirdest thing Iâve ever seen.â
