Chapter Eleven
The next day, the sun shone over Barcaster Park. It must have rained last night, for the whole world sparkled now. Percival peered through the drawing room windows in delight.
âWhere is Sabrina?â Aunt Horatia asked.
âIâm certain sheâs here somewhere.â
âI would have thought you would be spending hours wandering the rose garden together.â
âIt doesnât take hours to wander the rose garden.â
âLovers normally find a way.â Aunt Horatiaâs eyes glinted, and her lips twitched.
Aunt Horatiaâs lips werenât supposed to twitch. At least, they werenât supposed to do so in his presence. He was not doing anything amusing, after all.
Where was Sabrina? Percival bit his lip. The point of being at a spectacular estate was not to spend oneâs time whiling it away in oneâs bedroom.
âPerhaps sheâs feeling shy,â Aunt Horatia said. âIt must be intimidating imagining being mistress of this estate.â
âI assure you Sabrina Holt would be an absolutely wonderful mistress,â Percival said. âShe is not feeling intimidated.â
âThen where is she?â
The back of Percivalâs neck warmed. âNo doubt sheâs resting. In fact, you should rest too. It is a most worthwhile manner in which to spend oneâs time.â
Aunt Horatia gazed at him curiously. Blast. He was overreacting to his auntâs teasing. He firmed his lips, then hastily marched away.
Perhaps he could see what Sabrina was doing. Was it possible she was uncomfortable? Or unhappy? Maybe she was regretting agreeing to be faux courted by him.
The thought made Percivalâs chest tighten. He didnât want her to be unhappy.
Percival marched through the garden, looking for Sabrinaâs red hair.
Sunbeams inundated the garden with golden light. The gardeners looked at him curiously, but Percival didnât care. He quickened his steps, lest he meet them and be forced into awkward conversation about why he was plucking roses from his garden when he had a full staff to do it. A full staff who probably had the sense to wear proper gloves that wouldnât prick them.
Sabrina was unfortunately not in the garden. She also was not in the drawing room, or even, as heâd hoped, in the library.
Perhaps she was in her bedroom. This was his manor house. He could investigate, even if that particular corridor was confined to women. After all, this was the afternoon. Every woman would be dressed.
He turned his head to ascertain no one was around him. He quickened his pace, resisting the temptation to muse over the paintings he rarely saw. He adored this home, but he only kept open a small wing most times of the year. The house was too large, and when he was here, he was too conscious he was alone.
Finally, he came to her room, glad heâd paid attention when heâd spoken to the housekeeper about the preparations. He knocked on the door gently.
Footsteps sounded on the other side of the door, and his heartbeat quickened. Beads of sweat formed on his hands, despite the facts he was indoors and the temperature could only be described as ideal.
The door swung open, and Sabrina stared at him. Well, he thought it was Sabrina.
