"Except his ability to keep you, it sounds like." Kyle's head dropped again and Beau found himself clenching his fists to keep from reaching for the silky mop of hair that hid the boy's face from him.

"I don't know why." Beau could barely hear him but it still hurt. "I belonged to him." His luminous eyes rose to meet Beau's. "He was supposed to keep me. I thought that's how it worked."

Beau narrowed his eyes, hoping to keep his reactions to himself. He crossed his arms over his chest as he leaned back on the counter. Kyle watched him silently, expectantly. For what, he didn't know.

He cocked his head, finally, and blurted, "I could help you."

Kyle's cheeks flushed and he stuttered, "What... what do you mean?"

"I think you know exactly what I mean."

Kyle shook his head, but Beau saw the barest glimmer of hope there. "I don't know. It's hard to trust..."

Beau's heart broke a little more. Damn, but this boy had him in his clutches. "I know."

They stared at each other in silence while Beau waited for his decision. He would never in a million years admit how stretched to his limit he was right then. He was the closest he'd been to begging as he'd ever come. But he said nothing. It was in Kyle's hands now. It was his decision to make, whether to move forward with him from here and give Beau a chance, or cling painfully to the past.
