Lake Superior is the largest of the Great Lakes in surface area (31,820 sq mi) and volume (2,900 cu mi). It is the largest freshwater lake in the world (by surface area), and the third largest in volume (exceeded only by Lake Baikal in Siberia and Lake Tanganyika in Africa).

Lake Superior accounts for roughly 10% of the world’s surface freshwater. Water from all other Great Lakes could fit inside Lake Superior.

Lake Superior holds enough water to cover the 48 contiguous states at a uniform depth of 5 ft.

It is the cleanest Great Lake. Average underwater visibility is 27 feet.

A paddler who stops at Siskiwit Lake’s Ryan Island is on the largest island on the largest lake (Siskiwit) on the largest island (Isle Royale) on the largest freshwater lake in the world (Lake Superior).

If you were to walk the entire shoreline of Lake Superior, you would cover 2,726 miles (including islands).

Isle Royale is the largest of Michigan’s 14 wilderness areas.
