Suicide

According to the surgeon general (Satcher, 1999a), in 1996 the age-specific mortality rate from suicide was 1.6 per 100,000 for tento fourteen-year-olds, and 9.5 per 100,000 for youth between fifteen and nineteen, which is about six times higher. Younger boys are about four times as likely to commit suicide as girls, and after the late teens girls are twice as likely to commit suicide. Suicide remains a serious problem for our youth and is increasing, especially among minorities. Depressed children are at risk for suicide and both children and adolescents often give out warning signs such as suicidal threats, giving away property, suddenly seeming to feel better, or becoming increasingly withdrawn. In all cases, when a youth makes some sort of suicidal statement or gives some sort of hint, it should be taken very seriously. The child should not be left alone until he or she is carefully evaluated by a mental health professional.
